Using Microsoft Excel custom functions

You can use Microsoft Excel to calculate various distances based on specific information through the use of custom functions available the program. The beauty of Microsoft Excel is that it can be used in combination with map programs as available from Microsoft to automatically calculate distances, driving time etc. and have the results returned to your worksheet.

Scenario

You have a small business that delivers products to various clients. You need to estimate the delivery costs or want to find better route planning to save on costs. You can in such an instance make use of Google maps or another mapping program in combination with Microsoft Excel custom functions. The internet based map program will help to get the precise start and end points. You will however realize that it can be a time consuming process to use Google maps and as such may use the Microsoft mapping program to calculate shortest distances which will then return the end-result to the open worksheet.

You will not have to be concerned about learning the application from beginning to end, since you will work with the data in your Microsoft Excel worksheet only. You will for instance, only need to use a custom function to calculate the driving time between two addresses listed in the worksheet while the mapping program will do the rest in the background.
