Basics of entering data in Excel spreadsheets

We also have Free training videos on this site ( visit the Home page or the Training Page)

When having to enter large amounts of data in Excel spreadsheets some planning is required. First identify the data that needs to be entered and what the main purpose for the worksheet will be. Still in the planning phase decide what lay-out will be used and which headings to include to provide an adequate indication of the data to be found in the specific rows or columns.

The next step in entering data in Excel spreadsheets involves the actual data entering process. The first step is to select the specific cell where the data needs to be entered and then entering the data after which you can either enter to move to the next cell or use the mouse to click on another cell.

Tools you can use the speed up process of entering data into Excel spreadsheets

There are a few tools to help you speed up the process a bit. You can either make use of the TAB key on the keyboard to move from one cell to another in the same row or make use of the ENTER key on the keyboard to move from the active cell to the next cell in the same column.

You can also make use of the up, down or left and right arrows to move from a current cell to an adjacent cell whether it is the one on top of the current cell with the up arrow or the one on the left or right side by using the side arrows.

If for some reason you need to cancel a data entry, simply click on the Esc button on the keyboard which will then cancel your entry. For more help on entering data into Excel spreadsheets view our training section.
