One of the free Excel spreadsheet training videos that you will find particularly useful when you want to rank a list of for instance, students according to their performance or salespeople according to their total and average sales is the free Excel spreadsheet training on the RANK function.

Short overview of steps in using the RANK function

Select the cell where you want the information to be displayed and then select the Function Wizard on the menu bar. Use the drop down arrow to select the category – Statistical. Scroll down or type in R to quickly go to the RANK option. A dialog box will open which will ask a few questions to have the ranking completed.

  • Number – the number for which you want to find the rank for.
  • Reference – this is where you will type in what it must compare the number with that you have given in the Number box.
  • Order – this is how you want the order whether in descending or ascending order. If you want descending type in 0. For ascending order type in 1 (any number that is not 0).

This function will allow you to see for instance, if a person or department is ranked 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th etc. You can apply the same function to other areas such as units sold if it is for instance, a sales department. For a step by step guide and practical application on the RANK feature view our free Excel spreadsheet training video on RANK.
