IFRS 4 requirements and solutions

IFRS 4 is applicable to any type of insurance contract, but does not affect other liabilities of assets held by the company or entity which falls under IFRS 7 or the IAS 39 scope. It is also not aimed at the policyholder’s practice of accounting standards.

IFRS 4 requires that the insurance liabilities are reported in the balance sheet of the entity until they are no longer valid whether through cancellation or expiration. 

Accounting policies

According to the standard, only if an insurer’s financial records include more relevant and still extremely reliable information can the accounting policies be changed. An insurance company doesn’t have to change accounting policies for contracts to eradicate excessive cautiousness. If the company does already apply extreme caution, there is no need to apply additional measures.

Derivatives

Insurers don’t have to report a fixed derivative separate at fair worth if the fixed derivative adheres to the requirements of the definition of an insurance agreement. It does however require that the insurance company provides separate accountability for deposit elements of the insurance agreements to prevent exclusion of assets and liabilities from the entity’s balance statement.

IFRS 4 and information disclosure
