Introduction to Statistical Formulas

We also have Free training videos on this site ( visit the Home page or the Training Page)

Excel is packed with useful statistical formulas. We have listed and described some of the statistical formulas as an overview of what can be done.

Need to get an average?

Make use of the AVERAGE function, but be careful with dates. You can only calculate the average for dates if all the numbers in a range are dates. Also note that cells containing spaces are not seen as empty. If there are arguments that contain numbers and text then the AVERAGEA function is used.

Difference between COUNT and COUNTA statistical formulas

The COUNT function is used to calculate the total of numbers in an argument while the COUNTA is used to establish the number of values in the argument. With this there is another function known as COUNTIF which is used to the count the total number of not empty or blank cells within the specific range for which criteria has been set.

When will you use the MAX and MAXA functions?

The MAX will be used when you want to get the maximum value in a list of arguments whereas the MAXA will do the same, but will also include numbers, text, and logical values in the argument list.

What function is used to get the minimum value?

Whereas MAX is used to get the maximum value in an argument list, the MIN function will return the smallest value. The MINA function will thus do the same, but will include numbers, text, and logical values.

LARGE and SMALL

The LARGE and SMALL statistical formulas are used in the same way as the MAX and MIN functions, but in data sets to the return the largest and the smallest k-th value in the data set.
