In some instances Excel will try and ‘guess’ that you wanted a column of formula to continue to copy down as you make inputs. It is normally correct but sometimes you may want this functionality to not work.

You can switch it off by going to the options i.e. in 2007 click to windows logo on the top left, choose Excel Options, then Advanced, then Extend Data Range Formats and Formula’s as shown below.

  1. I am currently running a weight loss support group and we have been in need of a leaderboard for some time. I was watching your video on Automatic Sorting. I am new to Excel and I have every step up till you say we need to Anchor during the VLookup. I got the first one when you just put a dollar sign in front of the A13, But I am having trouble getting this to work when highlighting the entire leaderboard. I tried just putting in dollar signs but it is not working for me. Please help!! Thank you so much for your time.
