Manipulating data in Excel

    Excel is often used to manipulate data. Files are merged or information is attached to each line to make it easier to report on or more user friendly. This short tutorial will show you some of the useful tools to perform these tasks. In all courses we have assumed that you have been through our basics course.

VLookup
One of the most common uses of Excel is to merge two sets of data based on some common name, code or field. The VLookup function allows you to do this extremely easily.

Data sets often contain dates as one of their fields. In order to summarize data you may want to have a common date attached to each record. You can achieve this by setting up a column with the date set to the last day of the referenced month using the EOMonth function.

Concatenate and &
In certain cases you may want to combine two fields to create a third field e.g. combine a month and invoice number to create a unique identifier. The Concatenate and & functions can help you here.

IF
Depending on the contents of certain cells you may want to set up another field to show an alternate answer. The IF function allows you to show different results depending on certain criteria.

AND/ OR
In some cases you may want to identify certain rows (or columns) that meet all, or some conditions. The AND and OR functions gives you the ability to have multiply conditions (without getting into multi nested IF functions).
