A+
It is the certification that validates the computer technician’s skills and competency in specific fields. The first of the A+ certification exams was developed in 1993. Since then there have been two more versions that of 2003 and the 2006 objectives exams. Upon completion of the course and passing of the exams, the professional earns the designation of a Certified Computer Technician. Computer technicians who have extensive experience and worked hours (500) will do well to obtain the certification. Computer based examination with multiple choices is used for testing. Specific topics that are covered include for instance, installation of network cards, printers, hard drives, and more.
Network+
The certification serves the purpose to verify and validate the professional’s knowledge, experience and skills regarding communication security infrastructure and related fields of knowledge. It also includes measurement of the technician’s knowledge and skills in troubleshooting which forms a daily part of most of the computer technician’s work. The first exam in this category was launched as far back as 1993 after which several updates have followed including the 2002, 2005 and 2009 updates.
Security+
It is the certification aimed at validating the skills of professionals regarding infrastructure security cryptography operational security as well as related security concepts. It consists of four core courses and an elective course. It first came into being in 2002 as reaction to enormous security threats in the IT industry.
Server+
Aimed at the advanced technician with 18 to 24 months experience with Industry Standard Server Architecture known as ISSA, it tests the knowledge of the technician in topic areas such as multiple CPUs and RAID SCSI, and topics such as disaster recovery.
