CompTIA awards the security+ qualification to professionals in the IT industry who have shown their competency and skills through an examination. Normally about 24 months work experience in the specific field is required to qualify. Experience in the fields of network management, hardware and configuration may for instance, be required.

The CompTIA Security+ is seen as an important step towards qualifying for other industry certifications including that of the SSCP. CompTIA demands passing of several exams to qualify in a specific area ensuring that the standard is kept high. One of the misconceptions about the exams is that vendor specific topics and knowledge will be tested. It is not a vendor specific course or exam and general security concepts are tested. It is also not compulsory to have two years work experience although it comes highly recommended.

The pass requirement is however, high with 750 out of 900 being the minimum. An exam runs over a period of 90 minutes. It is however, also possible to retake the exam immediately if you have failed. Should you however, fail again you will have to wait two weeks before retaking the exam.
