Excel default cell format as date

Excel default cell format as date

For some reason, it seems that the Excel default cell format as date on some spreadsheet. This can be really annoying as often all your numbers (or what you expect to be numbers) are shown as dates. Also, as far as we can tell there is no obvious reason for this happening and it seems to occur on spreadsheets that previously were correctly formatted.

This appears to be a problem with the default setting of a cell style. In order to correct this you need to do the following (see graphic below).

  • Click on the Home Tab
  • Click on Cell Styles
  • Right Click on the Normal box
  • Click on Modify
  • A new dialogue box will appear. Click on the Format button and then choose ‘General’ (or the format you want).
