A common query is whether there is a function that will only add the visible cells. So if cells are hidden they must not be included in the result, but when they become visible they must be included.
SUBTOTAL and AGGREGATE (new in Excel 2010 only) are functions that allow for this. Depending on what options you choose it will SUM (or average, count etc…) either only the visible cells or all cells.
